The ultimate goal of any vision correction procedure is to provide a satisfactory level of uncorrected visual performance that results in a more enjoyable lifestyle.

Significant variety exists in the factors that motivate a patient to choose vision correction.

Close attention by our staff to both your motivation and the demonstration of surgical indication is required, before we will create a pathway to your LASIK procedure.

Our LASIK team will try to derive a true understanding of your expectations. Some patients present unrealistic demands on the surgical result. Other patients are more than pleased with uncorrected functional vision (20/40 or better). Your understanding of the non-predictability of the procedure is essential during the counseling and informed consent stages.

The following are guidelines that should be utilized in assessing your need and suitability for vision correction surgery.

Are you...?

1) 18 years of age or older. DECC prefers not to assume a patient under the age of 21 unless stability can be demonstrated for a period of two years. Best age range is 25-45 years of age.
2) Unhappy with contact lenses.
3) Unhappy with prescription lenses.

Do you Have...?...

4) A perceived need to see better without glasses or contact lenses.
5) A realistic understanding of the probable results of their surgical outcome, including an understanding of the less-than-perfect predictability of outcome and of the effects of presbyopia.
6) An understanding of the complications of the surgery, both mild and vision threatening.
7) A mydriatic refractive error within the range of correction achievable by the surgeon with his technique/effectiveness.
8) Visual acuity correctable to at least 20/40 with glasses.
9) Absence of corneal disease, especially early keratoconus and ocular inflammatory disease. Absence of any connective tissue diseases.
10) Absence of retinal disease that might lead to an increased chance of retinal detachment.
