Dr. Gary Markowitz, the first board certified ophthalmologist in delaware to do surgery using the FDA approved AcrySof® ReSTOR® Intraocular Lens

DOVER, DE. (May 13, 2005) – Dr. Gary Markowitz, Board Certified Ophthalmologist, today announced the first procedure in the state of Delaware using the newly FDA approved AcrySof® ReSTOR® Introacular Lens (IOL).  This procedure/technology has the potential to be to Baby Boomers, what LASIK was to the 20-30 year olds of the late 90’s.  Dr. Markowitz is the Medical Director of The Blue Hen Surgery Center in Dover.  The name of his practice is Delaware Eye Care Center with locations in Dover, Newark, and Milford, DE.

Approved on March 21, 2005 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), this product is the first and only IOL that uses apodized diffractive technology to provide cataract patients with and without presbyobia a quality range of vision.  In clinical trials, 80 percent of patients reported “never” wearing reading glasses or bifocals following bilateral cataract surgery.  A great majority of patients who undergo cataract surgery today receive customary IOLs, which typically require patients to use reading glasses or bifocals for near vision subsequent to surgery.

Clinical Trials were conducted in the United States and Europe to establish the safety and effectiveness of the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL.  A total of 566 people received the AcrySof® ReSTOR® lens in the clinical trials.  The mean patient age in the studies was 69.  Since its introduction outside the U.S. in 2003, more that 11,000 AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOLs have been implanted in patients by more than 900 surgeons in Europe and in other countries.

On April 30, 2005, Dr. Gary Markowitz completed a 4.5hour Certification/Educational course delivered by Alcon Laboratories, Inc.  Dr. Markowitz also had to submit clinical outcomes on 30 patients receiving monofocal procedures.  In this data he had to reach a refraction target set by PreVise outcomes management company.  By meeting all of these requirements, Dr. Gary Markowitz will have the honor of providing this new technological procedure on one of his patients. On Tuesday May 17, 2005, Dr. Gary Markowitz will be implanting the first AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOLs in a patient IN DELAWARE in the Blue Hen Surgery Center in Dover.
