Modern Glaucoma Treatment Can Begin Before Vision Changes

Glaucoma is often called the silent thief of sight because it can damage vision without causing early warning signs. At our locations in Smyrna, Milford, Newark, and Dover, we help patients detect glaucoma and explore modern treatment options that may lower eye pressure before additional damage occurs.

For many years, daily prescription eye drops were the standard starting point for glaucoma care. Eye drops remain effective and appropriate for many patients. However, treatments such as Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty and Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery now give eligible patients additional ways to manage the disease.

Controlling Eye Pressure to Protect Vision

Glaucoma damages the optic nerve, which sends visual information from the eye to the brain. Elevated pressure inside the eye is a major risk factor for this damage. Because vision lost to glaucoma cannot be restored, early detection and consistent pressure control are essential.

A comprehensive eye exam can identify signs of glaucoma before a patient notices changes. Additional testing may be used to evaluate the optic nerve, measure peripheral vision, and monitor the condition over time.

Considering Earlier Intervention

Glaucoma treatment is not the same for every patient. Some people respond well to prescription eye drops, while others have difficulty using them consistently. Side effects, complicated medication schedules, and trouble placing drops in the eye can all affect treatment.

For appropriate patients, an interventional treatment may reduce eye pressure and lessen dependence on daily medication. The decision depends on the type and severity of glaucoma, the patient’s target eye pressure, and overall eye health.

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty, or SLT, uses gentle laser energy to improve the eye’s natural drainage system. When fluid drains more effectively, pressure inside the eye may decrease.

SLT offers several possible advantages:

  • It is performed in the office
  • No incisions or stitches are required
  • Recovery is generally brief
  • It may reduce the need for glaucoma medication
  • It may be repeated in some cases

SLT may be considered as an initial treatment for certain patients with open angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It can also be used when eye drops are not providing sufficient pressure control or are difficult to manage.

Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery

Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery, commonly known as MIGS, includes several procedures that help fluid leave the eye or reduce fluid production. MIGS procedures generally use small incisions and cause less disruption to the eye than traditional glaucoma surgery.

MIGS may offer:

  • Better control of eye pressure
  • Less reliance on medication for some patients
  • A shorter recovery than traditional glaucoma surgery
  • An opportunity to address glaucoma during cataract surgery

These procedures are often considered for eligible patients who are already planning cataract surgery. However, MIGS is not the right choice for every patient, and more advanced glaucoma may require a different surgical approach.

A Treatment Plan Designed for You

Glaucoma care may include eye drops, laser treatment, minimally invasive procedures, traditional surgery, or a combination of approaches. Your ophthalmologist will evaluate your test results and recommend treatment based on the level of pressure reduction needed to protect your optic nerve.

Finding glaucoma early and treating it appropriately can help preserve your sight for years to come. Call us today to book your exam.
